This site was created as part of the COPLACDigital Conflict in America class. The objective of this project site is to offer insight into a level of institutional discrimination that existed in California until 1999. The issue concerned how the State of California Barbering and Cosmetology Act violated the Due Process and Equal Protection rights of African American Natural Hair Stylists in California, ( i.e., Sisterlocks) by requiring them to become Licensed Cosmetologists before they could legally offer their services. This site will present/explore the history of African American Hair Care practices, hairstyle images, maps and related website resource links.
