Scratching the Surface and Setting a Foundation

Hey everyone!

So Alyssa and I made some progress this week. We did acquire photocopies of some of the articles to look over. We haven’t gotten a chance to really dig deeper into the archives, so we are hoping we can pick up where we left of on the research process once we finalize our proposal tomorrow. We discovered that a local author wrote a book about the period of desegregation in our area that covers some of the conflict that happened in one or two of the counties. We are planning to each check out a copy and look it over as we feel this book will give us some great information on these specific counties that will aid us in our website later on. I will have to check on this, but I also believe the author is writing from her experience as well so it will be nice if we get a firsthand perspective on the period of conflict surrounding this time in our area’s history. We are also planning to dive in our university’s archives in the near future to see how the university reacted to the first African American student to enroll here and how they reacted to integration occurring in the schools around them.

Our proposal-making process went really smooth for the most part. Although we did face some obstacles(sickness, distance, and internet troubles), with the help of facetime we were able to divide the work evenly between us, stay on task, set the foundation for our project. We will be looking it over and making final adjustments tomorrow night and submit shortly after. With the proposal finished, I’m definitely excited to dive deeper into the articles and other resources and really begin the heart of our research.

  1. We fell a bit behind in our research progress as well, but it’s good that you have a plan for your future research! The book will be a great asset to your research/ website! It would be interesting if you guys could interview the author for a deeper look at her perspective. It would also be interesting to hear about how readers reacted to the book being published. I’m glad that despite the obstacles you faced, you were able to work together to finish your proposal!
