Slow but Steady

Hey everyone!

It was a slow week for Alyssa and I, but progress was definitely made! On Tuesday we visited the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center to see if we could find any more information regarding our topic beyond all the great things we have found so far. They were very helpful and we did find information regarding desegregation, but unfortunately most of it focused on how it occurred at every place/state but Fredericksburg. After we finished up there, we called the contact given to us for the managing editor of our local newspaper, The Free Lance Star in order to begin the process of requesting permissions to use photos from the articles on our website. She seemed unsure at first, but she said for us to send her an email detailing our project and its purpose and to provide some examples of the pictures we wanted permission for. She said it shouldn’t be a problem, but she wants more detail regarding their use. On Thursday Alyssa and I met up at the campus library to see if we could get some of the photos we wanted scanned so we can use them as examples in the email. Unfortunately the pictures weren’t scanning well and were of poor quality when they popped up on the screen after the scan was completed. On the other hand, we were able to find one or two of the pictures we wanted online that were used in recent Free Lance Star articles to attach to the email. We drafted up the email and sent it. We hope that she’ll allow permissions without hesitation, but we are thankful to know that if she is still on the fence we can get help from our professors and representatives of COPLAC to convince her further. All of the available information for our project has been gathered, so all we are waiting on regarding the gathering process that needs to be completed for milestone #1 are the photos. We are very hopeful and hope that this can be accomplished in time for Thursday.

  1. Hi Kailee!
I understand the slow week issue. I feel like it’s just that time in the semester where everything drags. I’m glad that you both have made some progress though! Even though the Heritage Center didn’t have information for your area of interest, it would be really interesting (if you both have a little spare time and space on your website) to have basic information about how other areas handled the conflict! It would allow for comparisons between those areas and Fredericksburg. I hope everything works out with the pictures! If you cite them properly, I don’t see why they would say no to you using them on your website! Good luck with everything and I look forward to seeing how everything comes together!
