Week Six

Hello everyone!

This week has been super busy for Kailee and I. We have done the finishing work of photocopying all the newspaper articles for our regional library. We also came on a good day of finding the local archivist for the other center in Fredericksburg that could have possible information on our topic. Kailee and I were able to find a phone number of the newspaper editor of the newspaper we are using for most of our research. We are going to ask for copyright use of the photos. Kailee was able to email the Fredericksburg Heritage Center to put in a form for permission to use a photo. A few days later she was able to get permission! They just gave her the information on how we can cite it. Our biggest obstacle right now is how we are going to get permission for the photos we use. We will still take photos of the high schools, but for the pictures that were taking during that time we will have to figure it out. We feel a little better after finding all that information at the regional library. There is an opening in the research for our website to close the gap. There is a lot of information on civil rights in our research, but not a specific place fore desegregation in Fredericksburg.

Our plan for next week is to go to the Heritage Center, and to finalize on what research materials we can actually use. We are mostly depending on newspaper articles. Our next goal is to call the newspaper editor to see about getting permission for the photos. We are hoping that will work out. A personal goal of mine is to make some comments more diligently. It will be exciting to see how other people are doing as well! A question of ours would be if we need to speak to anyone else at our school. We do not need to talk to the IRB person because we are not doing that. We were thinking about talking to the librarian about possible citing questions. Thanks!

  1. Me and Tyler are also working with local newspapers which has been both challenging and very interesting. It’s interesting that you need to get permission from the newspaper to use the images because I was under the impression that newspapers were for the public use and we could use them as long as we cite them. I’m looking forward to seeing how your project turns out because it seems quite similar to mine.
