Week Three

Blog #3: September 10th, 2017

UPDATE

Kailee and I have honed more on our topic. We are going to study on the different schools in our area that were affected after the Brown vs. Board of Education decision from the 1950s to the 1960s. It took about a decade after the court decision to have the schools integrate. We found information on what our particular university thought about it during that time, and how it integrated during that time as well. That will be a nice personal touch to our project.

One thing we wanted to work on this week was what information we could cite in for the timeline and maps. Kailee is doing the timeline, and I am doing the map. We found an article in a newspaper that had a timeline of Fredericksburg during the time desegregation, but since we found it in the library we did not know if we could have  way to bring it back to campus. After a second time going to our regional library we were able to get permission to photocopy various articles and documents we could use for our project. We plan to scan them at our school, and then put them up on our website. When we asked the librarian about citing they were unsure. We are going to ask our professors how we go about that. We want to make sure we do it right when it comes to giving credit when we cite it. They are public documents because we were able to take pictures and scan the papers we needed, but we want to make sure we cite it correctly. Fair use seems scary.

IRB

We did not contact our IRB person at our university because we do not  think we plan to talk to anybody about the topic. We want to focus mor eon what happened during that time period of the 1950s to 1960s. There are various articles about the topic in the newspapers we can find, so we can use that information for our different perspectives.

MAP

As for the map I used google maps. We found a few high schools, as well as the church that the students in one of the high schools. I first went to Google Maps, and it was weird using it for anything other than finding directions. Or finding cool places to see on there. I first had difficulty finding where to make the map, but then I found my maps. I found out how to pick a point, change the color of the point, and to pick an icon. Most of my points are schools, so I did that as an icon. I also have a church, and a community center. I then found just by exploring I can make a description for each place. Also, I put a walking route from Walker Grant High School to the two different places. I did not know how to write a description, or how to change the color for the walking route. If I were to make a story I would need help on how to do that to make them all go together. Overall, it was not that bad!

  1. Hi Alyssa! It is great that you guys narrowed down your topic to a specific event in history! I think it will really help with your research and it will be fascinating to see how that court case impacted the schools and other places in your area! If you look on purdue owl, they have great examples on how to cite various sources, including newspapers! Here is a link to their guide on how to cite periodicals: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/07/
Also, I think your map looks great! It’s helpful to see where the different areas were located and how the students were impacted not only in school, but in the community as well. To tell a story with the map, the Storymap tool might be more beneficial to use! The only downside to this tool is that you have to utilize Google Chrome. Good luck with your research!
