Goal: October 5: Visit the heritage center and revisit the Virginiana Room and campus library to gather research materials in the form of newspaper articles from The Free Lance Star and photographs of the events related to the conflict. Permission is requested for photos from The Free Lance Star.
Hello everyone! Kailee and I have tried to find more materials for our project, and we were not able to find a lot more information. On Tuesday we visited the Heritage Center in Fredericksburg that has archives of Virginia History. We were told before from a representative from the Heritage Center the week before that there could be possibly information on desegregation of schools from Virginia. We arrived to the center, and we were able to have someone help us. We looked on the records online on the summary of some of the collections documents, and we gave them to the lady who helped us retrieve them. We used keywords like “desegregation” and “Fredericksburg schools”. When we found documents on desegregation we found only documents about desegregation in other parts of Virginia and the country. We could not find anything specific on Fredericksburg schools. When we found documents on Fredericksburg schools we find a really cool thesis from one of our past Deans for our school about desegregation, but not specifically in Fredericksburg schools. We could not use the documents, but now we know that we tried all our our options for information on our topic.
The other main thing we did this week was after the research contract was trying to figure out how to properly cite the photos we will use for our project. We found a representative for the newspaper we want to use, and we called. She was a bit confused and weary of the website, and it being up for a long period of time. We asked that question during Thursday’s class, and a professor from our campus might get in contact with the editor to clarify. We emailed the editor as well. We were trying to scan the photocopies of the newspaper articles, but when it was scanned it was not clear. The pictures were almost black. We have to find another way to get the pictures on file. We do have permission to use one photo from the Heritage Center. Hopefully we get to have permission for more photos soon!
